gts155 “shine”
They say that waking up is haaaa-aard to doo-oo.
01-01 Arthur Fields – Victor 18489 – Oh How I Hate To Get Up In The Morning (1918)
— it was the War To End All Wars, oops. But incentive to learn to play the horns.
01-02 The Beatles – Revolver 103 – I’m Only Sleeping (1966)
— the fifth album I bought. Rubber Soul was 4th. Six? Kiss Alive, of course!
01-03 Joey Delorenzo – Mi-Val 001 – Wake Up To The Sunshine Girl (1973)
— turning guitar into percussion: always a good idea.
01-04 The Insomniacs – Wake Up! 11 – Sunshine Girl (1994)
— pretty good garagey tune, but more important: a triple win for this spot in the show!
01-05 Sweet Honey In The Rock – I Got Shoes 17 – Look! Look! The Sun Woke Up! (1994)
— I probably should have put this one at the end of the 2nd set, but breaks up the chunky rock here. Apologies for the mis-speak announcing this one, was reading the script faster than my mouth.
01-06 Black Mercies – Murder It Sweetly 03 – Wake Up Sunshine (2009)
— includes a “yeah yeah” to mark it as double-aughts poprock.
01-07 LaVern Baker – LaVern Baker 104 – Get Up! Get Up! (You Sleepy Head) (1957)
— whistling good enough to shame the Bing.
02-01 Dropkick Murphys – Do Or Die 13 – Finnegan’s Wake (1998)
— can only spell shill-ay-lee phonetically, that’s my shame.
02-02 Bob Calloway – UBC 1013 – Wake Up ‘Little Boy Blue’ (1960)
— only last week, learned that “cows in the corn” was a coded warning used on the Underground Railroad.
02-03 Johnny Copeland – Wand 1130 – Wake Up Little Susie (1966)
— “Clyde” Copeland’s best tune may have been his daughter Shemekia. This cover beats the Everly Brothers with a cane. Always interested me, that this is not a one-off for Little Susie, the lyrics say “again”. Thus, I always sing it as “floozy”.
02-04 Hank Thompson – Capitol 2646 – Wake Up Irene (1954)
— think Irene could be my soulmate.
02-05 Los Lobos – Kiko 02 – Wake Up Dolores (1992)
— got that Tom Waits beat to it, don’t it?
02-06 Leo Kottke – Live 04 – Jack Gets Up (1995)
— all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. Got my first Kottke album in the 80s. Found it on the side of the road.
02-07 Jane Turzy – Decca 27622 – Good Morning Mister Echo (1951)
— always nice, if you can wake up in a cathedral.
03-01 The Offenders – Conehead Records – Wake Up Rebels (2008)
— no release number for this single on Conehead. Punks don’t need numbers.
03-02 They Might Be Giants – No! 13 – Wake Up Call (2002)
— almost sounds like using the coffeemaker perk up instead of an alarm.
03-03 Rap Reiplinger – The Best Of Rap 03 – Wake-Up Call (1993)
— Hawai’i’s goofiest brah.
03-04 Gary Hoey – Wake Up Call 04 – Wake Up Call (2003)
— nothing can keep Hoey down.
03-05 Lynn August – Creole Cruiser 09 – When I Woke Up This Morning (1992)
— zydeco might have been born that way because swamps make fiddles rot out fast.
03-06 Kristi Rose – This Is Pulp Country 08 – Rise And Shine (1999)
— speaking of fiddles!
04-01 The Notables & Les Baxter Orchestra – Capitol 3120 – Wake The Town And Tell The People (1955)
— a measure of pity, just think: these were the folks trying to keep Elvis, Chuck and Jerry Lee out of your teenager’s ears.
04-02 Four Tops – Motown 1090 – Shake Me, Wake Me (When It’s Over) (1966)
— also released on Motown’s Tamla imprint, not sure why some platters got the double treatment, or in which order.
04-03 Green Day – American Idiot 11 – Wake Me Up When September Ends (2004)
— one of those albums, with not a single bad tune.
04-04 Surreal McCoys – Diesel Only Records 8427 – Woke Up (1992)
— just a couple cold ones, and now look what you’ve done. Thank you.
04-05 The Tibbs Brothers – ATCO 6074 – (Wake Up) Miss Rip Van Winkle (1956)
— rockabilly right when the guitar ebowed out the sax.
04-06 The Space Lady – The Space Lady’s Greatest Hits 203 – I Had Too Much To Dream (Last Night)
— album noted above released 10 years ago, but tune appeared on a compilation 25 years ago.
05-01 Pink Floyd – Atom Heart Mother 204 – Alan’s Psychedelic Breakfast (1970)
— unsure if this is pre-, post- or during the psych.
05-02 FSB – FSB II 101 – Wake Up (1978)
— progressive rock from Bulgaria.
06-01 Ray Charles – ABC-Paramount 10588 – I Wake Up Crying (1964)
— after the spacey 5th set above, no more perfect palate cleanser.
06-02 Foals – Wake Me Up 01 – Wake Me Up (2021)
— believe this qualifies as funk, although it edges 80s new wave.
06-03 Bluekilla – Ska-A-Go-Go 10 – Wake Up (1996)
— German ska is some of the most innocent, even though this needed some bleeping.
06-04 Norman Witcher – Poor Boy 102 – Wake Me (1958)
— on the prowl for honky-tonk nightlife, back when a guy could be named Norman and taken seriously. Notice that? Nobody was named Adolf after 1945, and no poor boy was named Norman after that Hitchcock movie.
06-05 Julia Nunes – Settle Down 01 – Stay Awake (2012)
— one of the uke stars spawned by U-Tub, this one with staying power born of strong songwriting.
06-06 Lee Wiley – Lee Wiley Sings Vincent Youmans 104 – Rise ‘N Shine (1952)
— float out on a note of tinkling sugar.
… and a bonus track…
07-01 The Upsetters – Wake Up
— unable to find release info, due to multiple bands using this great nym!
