Ep 160 – shpingle

gts160 “shpingle”

5 tunes per hour, that’s comfortable progrock.

01-01 Genesis – The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway 302 – The Waiting Room (1974)
— the album version. Across 102 shows for the Lamb tour, they never played this song the same twice. This is how one identifies which Lamb concert one is listening to.

01-02 My Solid Ground – My Solid Ground (1997 CD reissue) 11 (bonus track) – Flash (Original Full Length Version) (1970)
— only “Flash Part IV” made it onto the 1971 album, at just over two minutes. Here is the full version, recorded at Studio Mörfelden in Frankfurt on 1970-10-27 when guitarist Bernhard Rendel was 16. A shorter version of this was recorded at the same time, entered into the SWF Radio contest for amateur bands, and won second place.

02-01 Etna – Etna 103 – Across The Indian Ocean (1975)
— third album for this Sicilian quartet, but the only one under the name Etna. Brothers Antonio and Agostino Marangolo (keys and drums) enlisted their cousin Carlo Pennisi to play guitar.

02-02 Ruphus – Brain Festival Essen 402 – No Deal (1977)
— playing Germany in support of their 4th album “Inner Voice”, everyone playing on this track’s surname ends in “-sen”, because they’re Norwegian after all.

02-03 Weidorje – Weidorje 201 – Vilna (1978)
— short-lived French group (76-79), from their only album. This is written by keyboardist Patrick Gauthier.

03-01 Kiwa – Violently Hippy RMXS 03 – Nasha Universo (2004)
— album is a compilation of remixes of Hidria Spacefolk songs, done by fellow Finnish artists. Kiwa are the “glitch hop” duo of Markku Louhio and Matti Elsinen.

03-02 Kraftwerk – 1971-06-12 Photokina, Köln, DE 04 – Ruckzuck (1971)
— long way to go, until Kraftwerk got their “Pocket Calculator” fame.

04-01 Xhol Caravan – Electrip 201 – Raise Up High (1969)
— one of the founders of “Krautrock”, this is as seminal as it gets. Discogs won’t show you the album cover because there’s boobies, even though they list the proper name of Xhol Caravan’s fourth album: “Motherfuckers GmbH”

04-02 Shpongle – Remixed 07 – Around The World In A Tea Daze (Ott Remix) (2003)
— similar to the Hidria Spacefolk entry above, an album of Shpongle tunes remixed by other artists. In this case, the “Ott” is English dub artist Otteran Langrell. Remixed at Ott’s home which is also the offices of his own label, Ottmusic.

… and a bonus track…

05-01 M. Efekt – Svet Hledacu 102 – Hledám Své Vlastní Já (1979)
— the “M” is of course for “Modry”, which the band chose when the Czechoslovakian communist government told them that they couldn’t call themselves “Blue Effect”, because the blues were a degenerate Western influence on Czech youth.
