gts206 “eekish”
Brains are apparently bad for your complexion.
01-01 Sister Rosetta Tharpe – Decca 8669 – Strange Things Happen Every Day (1944)
— she was right about everything.
01-02 Gein And The Graverobbers – Humanoids From The Deep 203 – Ghoulardi A-Go-Go (2000)
— in tribute to Ernie Anderson, who hosted B-level horror movies latenite on WJW in Cleveland from 1963 to 1966, using the name Ghoulardi. Besties with Tim Conway, he later did voicework for the Carol Burnett Show, and fathered current director Paul Thomas Anderson. Paul named his film production company after his dad’s old character.
01-03 Dick “Ghoulardy” Knight – Geminix 5505 – His Ghoul (1973)
— no info on this one, but a Wiki search takes you to a Japanese manga series called Dick Fight Island, so be warned.
01-04 Ghoul Talk – I Want To Consume 02 – I Just Like To Watch (2024)
— not so much a band, as a “performance project” run out of Seattle by Rachel King and her cat, Pudding Bear.
01-05 Kevin Watson – Salem 120 – Watching The Ghouls Go By (1967)
— normally a jazz guitarist, here he puts some surf to the wax. The website for the New Zealand National Library lists some audio of Kevin Watson circa 1966, but not available online. You have to go to Wellington and find the Katherine Mansfield Reading Room.
01-06 スーザン (Susan) & Yukihiro Takahashi – 恋せよおとめ (The Girl Can’t Help It) 201 – I Only Come Out At Night (1981)
— half French, half Japanese, 100% called the Diva Of TechnoPop.
02-note: apologies for the listing mistake in the following mic-break.
02-01 Master Wilburn Burchette – Wilburn Burchette’s Guitar Grimoire 101 – Birth Of A Witch (1973)
— self-released albums sold via mail-order, advertised in the back pages of Fate Magazine. A “self-taught mystic”, Burchette burned all of his music in 1977.
02-02 Masters Of Reality – Sunrise On The Sufferbus 02 – J.B. Witchdance (1992)
— from just down the Turnpike in Syracuse New York, and yes the name is a tribute to Black Sabbath.
02-03 April Wine – Nature Of The Beast 103 – Sign Of The Gypsy Queen (1981)
— out of Nova Scotia, hit it big in Montreal. Canadian Music Hall Of Fame inductees.
02-04 Alanis Morissette – Yaga OST – Season Of The Witch (2026)
— the Second Queen Of Canadian Music, after (according to them) Celine Dion.
03-01 The Darts – Halloween Love Songs 02 – Zombies On The Metro (2026)
— a Halloween album, but released in February of this year by this all-female band out of Arizona.
03-02 The Rondels – Anthology Vol. 2 08 – Zombie (1964)
— Boston group of the early 1960’s, a true One Hit Wonder, but this wasn’t it. Unreleased until 2021.
03-03 Rob Zombie – The Electric Warlock Acid Witch Satanic Orgy Celebration Dispenser 05 – A Hearse That Overturns With The Coffin Bursting Open (2016)
— real name: Robert Bartleh Cummings.
03-04 Mark White & Richard Fleeshman & Ensemble – Ghost The Musical OCR 07 – Ball Of Wax (2015)
— rare one moving in the opposite direction: first the 1990 movie then the 2011 play.
03-05 Bone Orchard – Swallowing Havoc! 201 – I’m Boned (Boneabilly Party) (1984)
— UK 80’s group where the guitarist went by the stage name Lord Dickie, even though he had a perfectly rock-acceptable real name: Troy Tyro.
03-06 Headstone Horrors – This Town Called Puragatory 08 – The Old Bone Orchard (2019)
— from further north: Nottingham, England.
04-01 The Pharaohs – Iona 1002 – The Green Werewolf (1961)
— from Victoria, British Columbia. No relation to Sam The Sham, nor to the Pharaohs who recorded the original of “Louie Louie”.
04-02 Banjo Dan & The Mid-Nite Plowboys – Green Mountain Skyline 12 – The Werewolf (1986)
— recorded in their home-base of Vermont in May 1986.
04-03 Atomic Rooster – BBC Radio 1 Live In Concert 06 – Devil’s Answer (1972)
— took 20 years for this to be officially released.
04-04 Hot Blood – Hansa International 17-103-AT – Soul Dracula (1976)
— German group with several disco 45’s in the mid 1970’s, all of them Halloween themed.
05-01 Pulsallama – The Devil Lives In My Husband’s Body (video version) (1982)
— (in)famous for arguments and fistfights on stage, this 12-piece all-girl band didn’t last long. This version of their only “hit” is from the music video, and contains a bleep. Unable to find a version which reveals what was bleeped! The group featured my hero Ann Magnuson, later the ringleader of the band Bongwater.
05-02 Agalloch – The Mantle 02 – In The Shadow Of Our Pale Companion (2002)
— now retired, the band rocked Portland, Oregon for twenty years. Hey listen, this show is edited and assembled by pruning the sounds in raw waveform state. Near its end, this song’s soundwave does something we have never seen, and no idea how the producer accomplished it. Have good skill at audio engineering but there’s always a new surprise!
06-01 Patrick Page – Hunchback Of Notre Dame Studio Cast Recording 13 – Hellfire (2016)
— still rare, but a second instance of a stage musical based on an earlier film, in this case, Disney’s 1996 cartoon of the 1831 Victor Hugo book.
06-02 Cliff Honiker – Holy Mother, Let It Be 103 – Come On, Satan (1971)
— not much to be learned about him, perhaps AKA Orson Fire? On a record label which only ever released two LP’s and three 45’s.
06-03 Djam Karet – Afghan: Live At The Knitting Factory 02 – Night Of The Mexican Goat Sucker (2001)
— at it for over 40 years, the band self-released this live show, from 2001-07-26 at Knitting Factory, NYC.
06-04 Famous Monsters – In The Night!!! 06 – The Haunting Of Planet Earth (1998)
— unsure where the band is from, but this album recorded in New Orleans, with members Devil Doll, Vampire Girl, and She-Zilla on drums.
06-05 Count Baltes & The Egors – Raven Records 2723 – Opening The Coffin (1973)
— Clement Baltes, a DJ on country radio station WCLU in Cincinnati. His only record as “Count”, according to buckeyebeat.com: “He seems to have dropped the character by 1980 when his house, which had been a public Halloween haunted house exhibit, was burned for a fire training exercise.”
… and a bonus track…
07-01 The Shadow Ring – Put The Music In It’s Coffin 103 – Put The Music In It’s Coffin (1994)
— yes, it is spelled “It’s” on the jacket and label. These bad grammarians are out of Kent, England.
