gts174 “devlish”
Had a tune by the band Stuffed Babies On Wheels, but ran out of time.
01-01 The Lumberjack With The Northwood Singers – Coach 6557 – Hell Bound Train (1965)
— with the boiler full of lager beer, bound to be a fun trip!
01-02 cast – Hadestown OBC 09 – Way Down Hadestown (2019)
— still playing on Broadway, obviously won all kinds of Tony awards when it premiered.
01-03 The B-52’s – Wild Planet 201 – Devil In My Car (1980)
— I know from personal experience.
01-04 Tommy Scott & Scotty Lee – Katona BC-100 – The Exorcism (1975)
— “a hundred and eighty seven time times, and it keeps getting funnier every time I see it” -Beetlejuice. This pair of Scotts fail to mention anyone sucking anything in hell.
01-05 Leslie Sarony – Rex 8063 – Why Build A Wall Round A Graveyard? (1933)
— never thought about it, but hey yeah, why?
02-01 Ray Sanders – Tower 232 – Graveyard Dance (1966)
— oh okay, that’s why!
02-02 Wednesday 13 – Monsters Of The Universe: Come Out And Plague XVII – I Walked With A Zombie (Live From Nashville 2015) (2015)
— yes, the album has track numbers in Roman numerals. How goth are you?
02-03 Horrorpops – Live At The Wiltern 17 – Walk Like A Zombie (2021)
— now if we could only get them into an orgy with The Bangles, maybe they’d make mummies.
02-04 Louis “The Charmer” Farrakhan & Johnny McCleverty Calypso Boys – Rhythm M930 – Back To Back, Belly To Belly [Zombie Jamboree] (1954)
— have seen some of his speeches *after* he got religion, and they’re their nowhere near as fun as this. Kinda creepy.
02-05 Ozzy Osbourne – No More Tears 09 – Zombie Stomp (1991)
— no full 2-hour tribute show here, when Ozzy passed away recently, but he’ll haunt us thrice this eve.
03-01 The Floors – Come Unstuck 02 – A Wolf Hides (2019)
— not always the bad guys.
03-02 Mississippi Grover – Attack Of The One Man Bands! 125 – I’m Buried Alive
— a guy from Kingston (Canada, not Jamaica) who started in The Desecrators, before striking out on his own in 2005. This compilation CD released in 2007.
03-03 Mojo Nixon & Skid Roper – Bo-Day-Shus!!! 105 – I’m Gonna Dig Up Howlin’ Wolf (1987)
— mentions Dr. Gene Scott, who was indeed weird. Haven’t looked, but certain a popular video website must have some of his lo-budget TV shows. Check him out, a fellow even weirder than Mojo!
03-04 Round Robin – Domain 1424 – I’m The Wolf Man (1965)
— loud bark, and the tune follows through.
03-05 Ozzy Osbourne – Bark At The Moon 102 – Bark At The Moon (1983)
— this particular version comes off a Soviet-era knock, where they re-arranged the tracks to make this the lead song. Maybe they were right?
04-01 Walter J. Van Brunt & Maurice Burkhardt – Victor 17195 – The Ghost Of The Violin (1913)
— probably inspired by the rumors about Paganini, a famous violinist from just before the recording era. Rumored to have sold his soul to play like that, but in reality he had a genetic disorder which allowed him to touch his thumbs to his pinkies… OVER THE TOP OF HIS HANDS.
04-02 Love And Rockets – Seventh Dream Of Teenage Heaven 202 – Haunted When The Minutes Drag (1985)
— sure hope nobody dies, but would love to do a whole show in tribute of L&R. Not in my Top Ten of bands, but if forced at pitchfork-point to make a list, they’d make Top Fifty.
04-03 Bing Crosby & Andrews Sisters & Vic Schoen Orchestra – Decca 27631 – The Yodelling Ghost (1951)
— getting our weekly yodel in!
04-04 Dicky Doo & The Dont’s – Swan 4006 – Flip Top Box (1958)
— of course, this is the B-side to “Ne Ne Na Na Na Na Nu Nu”.
04-05 Nu-Trends – Lawn 216 – Spooksville (1963)
— might be my fave tune of the show.
05-01 The Cocktail Slippers – Shout It Out Loud! 01 – She Devil (Shout It Out Loud!) (2021)
— contains an explainer about she-devils.
05-02 Tony Casanova – Crest 1053 – The Grave (1958)
— so bad, it wraps back around to good.
05-03 Blue Öyster Cult – Don’t Fear The Reaper (TV Mix)
— don’t know where on TV this appeared, but a surprise treat.
05-04 The Arrogant Worms – Live Bait 06 – Malcolm (1997)
— chainsaws are legal in Canada.
05-05 Weird Al Yankovich – In 3-D 205 – Nature Trail To Hell (1984)
— poor Cub Scouts, didn’t have Jamie Lee Curtis to protect them.
05-06 Hollywood Flames – Ebb 144 – Frankenstein’s Den (1958)
— went to a party like this once. Therapy didn’t work.
06-01 Primus With Ozzy – Nativity In Black II 07 – N.I.B. (2000)
— pounder of a cover, which isn’t really a cover if you’ve got Ozzy by your side, right?
06-02 Rolling Stones – Beggars Banquet 101 – Sympathy For The Devil (1968)
— war with Venz by Thanksgiving; distraction from files. Predicted here first.
06-03 Home Videos – Home Taping Is Killing Music 09 – The Devil’s Credit Score (2025)
— not really much about his score, but the title was too good to pass up in a show like this.
… and a bonus track…
07-01 Billy Taylor And The Tear Drops – Felco 101 – Wombie Zombie (1959)
— out of Dallas, the first 45rpm record on Felco Records.
